Mexico’s Musical Traditions to Celebrate the Holiday Season at CSUN Plaza del Sol Performance Hall

Northridge, California: The rich musical traditions of Mexico will kick off the holiday season with “Fiesta Navidad: Mexico and Its Music,” on Sunday, December 3, at 2:00 p.m., at the Plaza del Sol Performance Hall (formerly The Performing Arts Center) at California State University, Northridge.

The show will explore Mexico’s rich cultural heritage with music representing regions throughout the country, including Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Chiapas and Mexico City.  Performances include the marimba, a xylophone-like percussion instrument that can be found in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and the salterio, a four-sided string instrument with a flat soundboard and bottom that is played by plucking the strings. The genres of music include huapango, canion tradicional mexicana, bolero and cancion ranchera.

Among the musical groups scheduled to perform are Orquestra Marimba Aquino, Conjunto Hueyapan, Trio Tradicion Mexicana and Ixya Herrera and Mariachi Estrella de Jalisco. Pacifico Dance Company, California’s premiere Mexico folklorico dance ensemble will bring another dimension to the musical performances with vivid illustrations in dance.

Fiesta Navidad will be at the Plaza del Sol Performance Hall at California State University, Northridge, on Sunday, December 3.  Tickets are available from $30-$15.  There are a limited number of student tickets available at $15 each (limit 2 per student) with proper ID.  20% Group Discounts for 12 or more are available by call ing 818-677-7686.  Parking is $4 at all times! The Plaza del Sol Performance Hall is located off the west side of Zelzah Avenue, between Prairie and Plummer Streets in the Plaza del Sol complex.
