THE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED CHAMBER MUSIC TRIO TO
PRESENT MASTER CLASS AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY,
NORTHRIDGE

at California State University, Northridge is proud to present the
Los Angeles premiere of the nationally renowned Gramercy Trio
on Sunday, November 13 at 2:00 PM in the CSUN Performing Arts
Center. The Trio; featuring pianist Randall Hodgkinson,
violinist Sharan Leventhal and cellist Jonathan Miller will perform
a program featuring Mozart, Brahms and the world premiere of
a newly commissioned work, Piano Trio by Nicholas
Underhill. This performance of "Piano Trio" by Nicholas Underhill
is sponsored by the American Composers Forum through its Encore
Program, supporting repeat performances of new
works.
As part of the Trio’s residency at the
University, they will offer a full master class on the stage of the
Performing Arts Center on Monday, November 14th at 11:00 am. Special
attention will be paid to performance students of piano, cello and
violin. The class will be moderated by Dr. Mary Kim from the CSUN
Department of Music. Qualified students from the community are
welcome to attend. Admission for the class is free, but limited due
to space limitations and therefore must be reserved in advance. For

The Gramercy
Trio tours throughout the country presenting concerts and
residencies for audiences of all ages. In keeping with their
dedication to new music, they have commissioned and premiered works
by composers such as Nicholas Underhill, Robert Aldridge, Joan
Huang, and renowned jazz pianist, Fred Hersch. "The trio, clearly

Pianist Randall Hodgkinson is a grand prize
winner of the International American Music Competition sponsored by
Carnegie Hall and the Rockefeller Foundation, has performed with
orchestras in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Boston, Cleveland and
abroad in Italy and Iceland. In addition, he has performed numerous
recital programs spanning the repertoire from J.S. Bach to Donald
Martino. He is an artist member of the Boston Chamber Music Society
and performs the four-hand and two-piano repertoire with his wife
Leslie Amper. Mr. Hodgkinson is on the faculties of the New England
Conservatory of Music in Boston and the Longy School in Cambridge,
Massachusetts.
Violinist Sharan Leventhal has toured
throughout the U.S. and Europe as a soloist, chamber musician and
teacher. A champion of new music, she has received grants from the
NEA, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music Recording, and the Fromm and
Koussevitzky Foundations, and premiered over 100 works by composers
such as Gunther Schuller, Virgil Thomson, William Kraft, and Scott
Wheeler. Ms. Leventhal is on the faculty of the Boston Conservatory
and is the founder and director of Play On, Inc., a non-profit
organization dedicated to promoting active participation in
classical music.
Cellist Jonathan Miller, a 30-year
veteran of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is the founder and
Artistic Director of the Boston Artists Ensemble. Solo appearances
include the Boston Pops, the Hartford Symphony, and the American
Cello Congress at the invitation of Rostropovitch. He has toured the
county as a member of the New York String Sextet. Mr. Miller has
served on the faculty of the New England Conservatory and the Boston
Conservatory, and currently teaches at the Tanglewood Music Center.
He and Mr. Hodgkinson have recorded the complete Beethoven Sonatas
on the Centaur label.
Composer/pianist Nicholas
Underhill has recently been commissioned by the Cleveland
Orchestra, hornist Richard King, violinist Takako Masame and flutist
Mary Kay Fink and the Gramercy Trio. His numerous New York recitals
include his 1985 debut recital at Carnegie Recital Hall, a 1987
performance at Merkin Concert Hall, and a June, 1993 concert in
Weill Recital Hall. He frequently appears with the Cleveland Chamber
Symphony and the Chamber Collective, of which he is a director and
founding member.

| The GRAMERCY TRIO will perform on Sunday,
November 13 at 2:00 pm in the CSUN Performing Arts Center at
California State University, Northridge. Adult tickets for both
performances are $45 in the Front Orchestra and $30 in the Rear
Orchestra. Group rates are available. All Students and CSUN Faculty
and Staff may purchase tickets in advance for $15 with current ID
(sorry, not available online). Single tickets can be purchased by

The Performing Arts Center is located on Zelzah
Avenue, between Prairie and Plummer Streets in the Student Union
Complex. Patrons should use Parking Lot G4 and are required to
purchase a $4 parking permit for all performances on the CSUN
campus.
