STATE STREET BALLET
Presents
“BALLROOM”
A Salute to the Swing Era
From The Grace of BALLROOM to The Excitement of TANGO

Northridge, CA: ArtsNorthridge at California State University, Northridge is once again proud to present State Street Ballet in “BALLROOM, A Salute to the Swing Era” on Saturday, April 2 at 8:00 PM in the Performing Arts Center. State Street Ballet, has achieved international acclaim for its innovative productions in the dance landscape, melding ballet and swing into a nostalgic tour de force in “BALLROOM, A Salute to the Swing Era”. Music for this popular program includes the legendary sounds of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Andrews Sisters, Billie Holiday, Glenn Miller, George Gershwin, Astor Piazolla, and more. “Ballroom” will feature the following program selections:

Salute to Sinatra- features the sounds of Sinatra at his best. Inspired by the legend, this ballet is an audience favorite whenever it has been performed.

Five by Gershwin evokes the romantic elegance of silver screen dance legends Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, for whom the composer wrote numerous scores. Taking his cue from Gershwin’s sophisticated harmonics, award-winning choreographer WILLIAM SOLEAU, who has several full length Gershwin ballets to his credit, has crafted and energetic, poetic interpretation of the original recordings “Our Love is Here to Stay” by Nat King Cole, “They Can’t Take that Away from Me” by Frank Sinatra, “Summertime” by Helen Merrill, “I’ve Got a Crush on You” by Linda Ronstadt, and “I Got Rhythm” by Ernestine Anderson. Ball gowns and tails complement Five by Gershwin’s chic style. Sometimes breezy, sometimes sensuous, sometimes witty, it is always “s’marvelous, “s’wonderful.”

Tango Rain is a powerful encounter with sumptuous music of Astor Piazzolla, Regarded as the father of New Tango, the Argentinean composer revolutionized the Tango and popularized it with his world tours. New York choreographer WILLIAM SOLEAU explores the fiery beauty and dynamic passion of Piazzolla’s Buenos Aires beat. Mr. Soleau characterized his interpretation of the Tango as “an attitude, rich in the full range of emotions.”

B.A.N.D. recaptures the toe-tapping tempos and cool glamour of the golden years of the Big Band. Set to original recordings of “Rum and Coca-Cola” by the Andrews Sisters, “Solitude” by Billie Holiday, “Nature Boy” by Nat King Cole, “Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby?” by Bing Crosby, and Duke Ellington instrumentals, the ballet soars and glides through the playful cadences of the period. Sleek costuming lends ambient savior-faire, and Emmy award-winning choreographer ROBERT SUND from San Francisco, packs freshness and fun into the dramatic music and dance dialogue.

It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing *Ballroom’s got it, and State Street Ballet swings! Who could ask for anything more?
